How to Celebrate Veterans Day

November 11th is Veterans Day. A day to remember our fallen soldiers and those who have bravely served to defend our freedom and serve our country. Many seniors on this day will want to pay their respects and honor those in uniform. To make this day memorable for your aging parent, whether they served in the military or simply wish to honor those who have, here are a few ideas on sharing Veterans Day together.

Attend a Local Parade.
Whether you are in the Seattle area or California, you should able to find a local community Veterans Day parade for your family to attend. Dress up in your most patriotic red, white, and blue with streamers or balloons in hand. The men and women in uniform will be honored by the presence of those who come to see them.

Community Event or Luncheon.
Many senior centers or assisted living communities will host events or lunches to honor seniors who served in the military. This can be an excellent opportunity for your parent to be recognized for their service. Or your family can attend to merely honor and thank those who have served our great nation.

Donate to a Veteran’s Fund.
If your parent is unable to attend an event, perhaps donating to a charity is a meaningful way to honor this day. There are many great organizations both locally and nationally that serve our veteran population. With a little online research, your family can find one that fits your goals and donate to a worthy cause.

Two veteran’s programs to consider are the Fisher House Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP). Fisher House Foundation builds comfort homes where military & veterans families can stay free of charge, while a loved one is in the hospital. The Wounded Warrior Project’s goal is to support those veterans who have been wounded during service. They provide free programs and services to address the unique needs of wounded veterans and their families to fill in the gaps between government care.

Over the last 20 years, it has been our extreme honor to care for many veterans and serve them and their families with dignity in our assisted living communities. It is a privilege to care for these heroes. This Veterans Day, we honor all those in uniform who have served or currently serve—thank you!
